Myth 3
Luke Guttridge return to a forgotten time to review Take 2's latest...
Myth III couldn’t have come at better time, in terms of resurgence in the genre, as new fans jump-on the fantasy band-wagon daily thanks to the renaissance of Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings (generated by the forthcoming film), and J K Rowling’s marvellous Harry Potter books/games/films, etc. Now is definitely a popular time for those who dabble in the realms of ogres, orcs, trolls, and magic, and strategy fans can get a new dose of their own choicest poison now too, in the form of the latest title in the highly-successful Myth series. Myth III: The Wolf Age.

Myth III is actually a Star Wars-style prequel to the first two games, setting a premise which fits in with what followed, and generally indulging fans with another good yarn. Of course it isn’t Tolkien, nor indeed is it JK Rowling, but in terms of games it’s definitely one of the better penned. The richness of the setting and it’s inhabitants, much heralded in the previous games, is brought to life vividly and immersively once again, thanks to the cut-scenes, voice-overs and excellent in-game art. It’s all very detailed and fans of the game to-date will not be disappointed with this latest adventure…
Once again there’s no resource management in this real-time strategy game; leaving the player to enjoy a more action-based affair, focussing on the tactics of unit movement; attack and defensive, etc. This is progressed through a reasonably good campaign of story-driven missions, which keep the game diverse, thanks mainly to the strength of the plot. The missions are brought to life by colourful units and foes, as well the rich terrain, weather effects and very gory battles. It’s all jolly good fun, if nothing revolutionary.
