It’s fast, it’s furious, it’s sleek, it’s sexy, it’s, well, ultimately quite shallow actually, but then we all need to indulge sometimes. Supercar Street Challenge, published by Activision, and designed by Exakt (interesting spelling…) Entertainment, is the latest in the “a bit like or Screamer” genre of titles; and as such a host of rather attractive and expensive cars racing around a number of tracks in variation locations. Successful wins enables you to move on to better cars and more challenging tracks. It’s a pretty standard formula; and one that has barely evolved since arcade gaming first left the confines of the slot machine and arrived in our offices and living rooms.

This isn’t necessarily a bad thing; though it does immediately colour ones judgement of a game that’s been done before – and will be again. No matter, anyway, for first impressions of Supercar Street Challenge are good. The graphics are lovely; especially the cars themselves which gleam realistically through the sharp visuals. They are all official models too, licensed et al from their respective manufacturers, the full line-up being: Bertone Pickster, Lotus Concept Vehicle M220, Rinspeed E-GO Rocket, Callaway C12, Pontiac Concept GTO, Vision CTEK K/2, Fioravanti F100, Pagani Zonda C12-S, and the Saleen S7. The inclusion of the Saleen Styling Studio means you can also create your own automotive designs; though this element is a superficial one. The track scenery is attractive too, and reasonably detailed; it certainly made my system strain, the screen jerking slightly at the beginning of races when the polygon count on screen was at it’s highest.
