Battle for next-gen domination is really starting to hot up with all three consoles selling well according to numbers released today.

Nintendo is well out in front with 435k units sold in January, with the in second place pushing 294k consoles and bringing up the rear with a not-disappointing 243.5k Playstation 3s.

All of these numbers were put in context by the 300k cut price consoles moved in the same period. This shows that the market isn’t quite ready to go all next-gen just yet, as well as the selling-power of a substantial back catalogue – something the Wii doesn’t have on its side.

Supply problems cited by Sony in previous months are seemingly behind them and with the marketing push stateside is still in effect some pundits believe the 360 second place is tenuous. The 360 has been on sale for 15 months now, and Sony have Redmond's position in their sights.

"TIE ratios for [the] have improved by 80 percent since launch and should continue to climb with the release of the much-anticipated MotorStorm from SCEA and Virtua Fighter 5 from Sega," the Japanese giant said in a statement.

So the leaderboard in full now stands at 933k PS3s, 1.5m Wiis, and a whopping 4.8m 360s. Let’s see where it goes next month shall we?
