Paperboy tomorrow, BSG Arcade in the future
New games bounce onto service
What will you be sending your Valentine tomorrow morning? A ragged newspaper through the window perhaps? Midway certainly hope so, with the publisher confirming late yesterday that tomorrow's Live Arcade release will be a Digital Eclipse crafted remake of classic Paperboy for the Xbox Live Arcade. The new game should be downloadable from 9am, all being well.
A faithful recreation of the 1980s classic is promised, with our naughty scamp of a paperboy racing around apparently peaceful neighbourhoods, delivering the papers as quickly as possible without breaking windows or indeed getting hit by a car.
As well as the retrograde singleplayer game, our true love will also be sending us a new multiplayer mode, allowing co-operative play on one console or over Live. Then there's the promise of improved sound and graphics, all yours for 400 Microsoft points. Tomorrow. How romantic...
Not so romantic, is the prospect of hulking-great battleship rumbling onto the Arcade, but this too is a possibility in the future, with Auran games said to be working on Battlestar Galactica for the download service. Single and multiplayer space combat is the order of the day, with the best battles from the first two TV series promised.
"We wanted to bring a more intense combat experience to gamers," commented Bill Kispert, of TV show maker NBC Universal. "From a story standpoint, fans will be able to relive key battles from the first two seasons of the show, and then we'll add new content and missions outside of that."
The executive also said a new console game was on the agenda, but could take several years to perfect, hence the Arcade release in the run-up to series three.
More soon.
