PS3 importers warned by Sony
Lawyers tell MCV the hard facts
UK industry publication MCV is this week reporting a veiled warning from a high-flying law firm representing Sony, that the profits those importing the PS3 might derive form selling the new system, will pale into insignificance versus the legal costs of Sony action against them. Representatives of law firm Davenport Lyons said that importers face a huge risk, and would be left without a legal leg to stand on if they're caught selling the PlayStation 3 in regions where it has yet to be officially released.

“As far as importers of PS3s are concerned, they should bear in mind that any profit they may make from importing the consoles into Europe without Sony’s consent this Christmas may well be short lived,” lawyer Mitra Pahlabod told MCV. “They run the real risk of defending lengthy and costly trademark infringement proceedings.”
Sony are also investigating a UK advert promising a PS3 for Christmas, and state that they have reported the potential grey importer to Trading Standards. “Brand owners should be aware of their rights with regard to grey importing, monitor closely the sale of their goods and where possible ensure that their trademark registrations are kept fully up to date,” Pahlabod added on the subject. More Sony-scuppering as we get it.
