The version 3.0 update for the handheld is now out, and those of you fortunate enough to have acquired a now have a few exciting new features to tinker with. Not only does the update allow the handheld device to be used as a controller for the PlayStation 3, you can also download emulated titles from the PlayStation Store and play them on your PSP.

The ability to play emulated titles certainly has a lot of potential, but you will of course need a PS3 to access the store in the first place, rendering this feature somewhat niche interest until can deliver a reasonable number of units - and release the new console in PAL regions. The likes of will be among the first batch of emulated PS hits, with several promised via the store by Christmas.

On the controller front the PSP will be able to browse media stored on the PS3, including video and music, and will also be able to access the PS3 web browser. Non-PS3 related changes include camera support in the photo area, more playback options, a visualizer, and more detail on RSS feeds.

Finally, you can now opt for the PSP not to load any resident UMD on start-up, which is handy. Version 3.0 can be head now via the Japanese website, a version is expected soon... who knows how long PAL regions might have to wait, however.
