At the tail end of last week, it was revealed that the Honduran Congress had voted unanimously to ban all violent videogames and toys. They believe that removing these aggressive ‘influences’ will help stop the rising levels of violent crime in the South American country.

Games to be removed from shelves before the law begins in June 2003 include Resident Evil, Turok, Duke Nukem, Shadowman, Quake, Doom, and Perfect Dark. Toy weapons and similar playthings are also for the chop.

The new law is awaiting final approval from the Honduran President, though it is predicted he will agree to this sweeping legislation. Whether or not this will provoke some kind of response from the masses, particular the nation’s gaming fraternity, will be interesting to see, but perhaps more interesting still will be whether any discernable decline in crime will become apparent as a result of the law.
