Sopranos creator separates game from TV show
Nothing to do with the show, we're told
In a frank and occasionally odd interview with MTV, Sopranos creator David Chase has highlighted the degree to which the TV show and the game will be unrelated, pointing out that whilst the new title uses a plot he crafted some time ago, it wasn't really his idea and doesn't have much to do with the show itself.
"What I didn't want to have happen was that the game and the show bleed together, that any of the stuff in the real story arcs that we have - or any of the real narrative we have - was in the game or had anything to do with the game," Chase told MTV, also conceding that he himself has little interest in games - though he hopes people will "have a good time playing it".
The creator added that the game won't even bear a great deal of relation to the New York mob scene at the centre of the hit TV show, with the characters in the game reportedly coming from Philadelphia. Despite Chase's insistence that the game is little to do with the show then, publisher THQ have enlisted much of the real cast for the voice-acting involved (including James Gandolfini), and locations from the show will feature in some form. All of which leaves us a little confused, it has to be noted.
Chase also tells MTV that he believes games are weak narratively speaking, concluding that, compared to non-interactive entertainment, "the game is different: There is no identification, really, any emotional identification." So there you have it.
