Wii gets Twilight Princess, controller speaker
Fils-Aime fills us in
More news filtering in from Nintendo's pre-E3 press briefing, this time revealing that Zelda: Twilight Princess will actually be made available in two flavours, the expected GameCube version, and a special Wii edition. Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime told conference attendees that the Wii version would make extensive use of the innovative remote controller, and boldly stated that its Ninty's finest Zelda title to-date. Quite a boast given the series almost unparalleled heritage.
Fils-Aime was on-hand to demonstrate the Wii version on-stage, and showed how Nintendo have utilised the 'nunchuck' style controller attachment to control Link's on-screen movements, coupled with the main 'wand', which has actions assigned to its various buttons. The 'z' button will aid targeting, and there's an on-screen fairy to help direct movements.
Various other actions were demonstrated, displaying at times incredible sensitivity, not to mention creativity on the design team's part, not least in 'bow' mode, which sees the wand used for aiming. There's even a speaker in the controller, so you can hear the bow pulling back as you take aim. The best bit however is how this little speaker works in cooperation with the Wii's main speakers, so you can literally hear the arrow move through space before (hopefully) striking your on-screen target. Very impressive indeed.
In total Fils-Aime showed how the controller can be used imaginatively to recreate sword, bow, fishing and other actions, and whilst Ninty seem obsessed with distancing themselves from the 'visual', the game also looked jolly nice too. More as we get it.
