Gizmondo delayed stateside
Down, but not out...
Whilst the demise of Tapwave's groundbreaking Zodiac machine must have certainly rattled handheld minnows Tiger Telematics, and their Gizmondo console - a North American launch is progressing regardless, despite a difficult start at the new system's European roll-out. The system was due out on August 11th stateside, but many commentators had expressed grave concern with little word or publicity forthcoming from the manufacturer. Tiger Telematics have since moved to explain their silence and convince the nay-sayers that the console can still succeed despite stiff competition from Goliath's Sony and Nintendo.

"We're moving the release date, which is why there hasn't been anything promotion-wise yet," a representative told UK games site Eurogamer.net. "The new release date is now October for the North American Gizmondo launch. More details will be released next week. There will be a launch event, but at present it's not been decided where or when."
The new October date will give Gizmondo a greater chance of success at debut, as Tiger build up a stronger distribution presence, set-up a satellite navigation package, and await the readiness of a 'key' US game currently in development. "There's the same number of staff and the machine is shifting enough stock. Even then the store is meant to be a technical showcase, there for brand experience, not a box-shifting exercise, much like when people go to the Apple shop while getting iPods from somewhere else. It's a focal point for the branding," added the spokesperson on rumours that the company's London store is flagging.
Finally, Tiger Telematics insist they are happy with sales of the system in the UK so far - and will give figures once a compulsory financial filing has first been submitted. We'll keep you on top of this.
