Midway initially backs PS3 in next-gen face-off
But Xbox 360 may be supported later
Midway boss Dave Zucker has stated in an interview that his burgeoning publisher will not be supporting the Xbox 360 from the off (the end of 2005, basically), but is creating launch titles for the PS3 - expected in Spring 2006. The CEO made his revelations in an interview with Thestreet.com, in which the next-generation of consoles was understandably a hot topic. Having revealed an initial PS3 leaning, Zucker went onto explain that the initially low user bases of next-gen hardware is leading Midway to balance their portfolio of titles with both current and future generation games.
"We're certainly going to have games for the launch of the PS3, we don't have any games for the launch of the Xbox 360," the big cheese stated, adding on the new Xbox that it's a "pretty small install base... To really maximise, to get the performance out of some of the games, it's going to take some time to do that. And we want to make sure we're launching high-quality titles."
He didn't rule out creating games in the future however, and Midway has in the past been supportive of all the major formats. Midway is a publisher in the ascendancy at the moment, having adopted more successful strategies after the acquisition of the firm by Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone. Zucker's aim is unashamed: to grow the company into a top-five publisher. "If you go back and look at Activision and Take-Two," he commented, "their revenue was the same as ours is today, and they both were able to grow their revenue base very rapidly and successfully to critical mass. Why? They were making quality games, and they were making the right games. And that's our plan." More soon.
