Despite the fact that the new handheld is only just beginning to reach its final major market (Europe) as we speak, speculation from gaming analyst PJ McNealy today asserts that a brand new version of the GameBoy is expected to be released this coming winter. McNealy points to Nintendo quotes stating that the DS is an entirely separate product line from the GBA, and that it appeals to different audiences. He also notes Nintendo's trend for upgrading handheld's every two years.

Finally, he said that of the GBA format throughout Asia will also be tempting Nintendo into introducing a new format this year, enabling the big N to introduce new measures and therefore stem the flow of potential revenues into pirates coffers. A new version of the 'GBA SP' is the full prediction, priced around $99 like the current model. Several experts had previously pointed to a release in 2006 for a new format, and of course this could still be the case, especially as Nintendo show no signs of revealing anything massive anytime soon. We'll keep you posted, regardless.
