Japanese gamers lapping-up the joys of FF Online
News of first MMORPG for the PS2, and the first in the Final Fantasy series...
It appears that Square have proved an MMORPG can be successful on a console, and have made a success of the PS2’s hard-disk add-on in the process! They today reported that 90,000 Japanese gamers have subscribed to the unique Final Fantasy Online – a figure that is sure to please and relieve many, most notably Sony, whose own Everquest will be hitting the PS2 soon.

What’s more, Square boasted figures of 55,000 players in Vana D’iel simultaneously, helping quash speculation of technical difficulties. This triumph appears all the more noteworthy, due to the reported PS2 HDD shortages.
This result may pave the way for more entries into this newly discovered market, and it is perhaps when a little more competition exists that we’ll see the true popularity of Square’s first online offering.
