Persson puts 13 million USD on the table for Psychonauts 2
Scahfer speaks of respect for Persson's achievements
Minecraft creator Markus Persson has said that he will match the original development costs of Psychonauts for the development of a sequel.
Double Fine boss Tim Schafer has revealed that Persson has offered as much as 13 million USD for the studio to develop Psychonauts 2 based on the original development costs of the first game.
Schafer said, "As soon as I mentioned the amount of money he said, 'Yeah, I can do that'.We had a lot of plot elements that were backstory in that [first] game that we planned on revisiting in the future and tying it back in. We had a longer story arc planned for those characters."
On Persson himself Schafer was also impressed saying, "He's just a regular guy. He didn't do anything sleazy to get it. He just made it himself, distributed it himself, it's a great story. I think we have a lot to learn from him, so I'd like to do something with him. And I'd like to make Psychonauts 2."
Schafer and Persson have yet to come to an agreement but, given Double Fine's rather unconventional success at securing funding this week on Kickstarter, a deal to finance Psychonauts 2 may not be far off. Or at least, we hope it's not far off.
