Free-to-play switch sees EverQuest II player numbers jump 300 percent
Another one of Sony's MMOs reaps the benefits from going free-to-play
EverQuest II is the latest MMO to see an impressive benefit of making the switch from subscriptions to free-to-play.
Sony Online Entertainment has revealed that their main fantasy MMO has seen a jump in player numbers of around 300 percent since it became a free-to-play title.
John Smedley, SOE president, said on his Twitter account: "We are seeing some amazing growth in EverQuest II. [There's been a] 40 per cent increase in daily logins since going free-to-play and a 300 per cent increase in new players. And we've seen a 200 per cent increase in item sales. Plus we have added a lot of new subs. All during the time that some really good competition hit the market."
EverQuest II launched in 2004 and has seen a gradual shift to free-to-play with EverQuest II Extend a reduced free-to-play version of the game launching in 2010 and the whole game making the FTP switch towards the end of last year.
Thanks MCV.
