Bigpoint has managed to make record amounts of money on a single virtual item for their DarkOrbit.

Players of DarkOrbit can collect set of up to ten drones although the final one can be a bit hard to collect. It can also be bought on the virtual store for the hefty price of 1000 EUR.

Even at such a high price the drone managed to shift over 2000 units in four days racking up around 2 million EUR (around 1.7 million GBP) worth of sales.

That's not bad numbers for a game that is entirely free-to-play.
