Modern Warfare 3 has already drawn a bit of attention over a fairly harsh scene a terrorist attack on London Games is adamant that their aim with the latest was not to shock.

The scene shows a father recording his wife and daughter messing around on a London pavement shortly before a van containing a chemical weapon detonates right next to the girl. Despite these scenes Sledgehammer's Bret Robbins claims that MW3 scenes like this are necessary to move the plot forward and aren't just in their to shock for the sake of being shocking.

Robbins said defensively: "What you don't do is say, we're just doing this to top ourselves. It needs to be something that's authentic, that actually moves the plot forward. We have some moments in the game that I think are pretty shocking, that push the envelope a little bit."

"But like I said before, it's not a matter of trying to be gratuitous about it, doing shocks for shock value," Robbins continued. "You always want to push yourself and see if you can push the limits of the medium, and storytelling. We've got such a big audience for this game that we want to deliver something that's memorable. Experiences that people are going to be talking about the next day after they played it, talking about with their friends. It's really a matter of creating something unique."

With MW3 out tomorrow it remains to be seen how the more shocking elements of 3 will be received by the wider public.
