Steinberg: EA's Call of Duty mudslinging a clever ploy
Harsh criticism brings more attention to Battlefield 3
Industry marketing expert Scott Steinberg has praised EA's tactics for throwing the spotlight on Battlefield 3.
EA has been heavily criticising the Call of Duty series with John Riccitiello saying he'd like to see the IP rot from the core with Jeff Brown adding that the series will see the same fate as Tony Hawk and Guitar Hero within the next 3 years.
Steinberg called the mudslinging a "clever ploy" to draw attention to their big Christmas release ahead of it's October debut.
The marketing expert continued: "It reflects just how seriously Electronic Arts and Activision take the coming clash of the titans - and how much each side has invested in the conflict's outcome. Modern Warfare 3 enjoys tremendous brand recognition and a massive fan following, giving it a marked advantage over Battlefield 3 at the cash register but Battlefield 3 may very well be the more ambitious, polished and critically-acclaimed of the two titles. Moreover, each side plans to spend well into the eight or nine figures promoting the titles, reinforcing just how high the stakes are they're playing for."
