Violent games are cathartic says John Carmack
DOOM creator thinks violent games are a good thing
Id technical director, John Carmack has been extolling the virtues of violent video games.
As one of the men behind DOOM, Carmack explained that he never really took the violent games debate seriously and felt that violent games are more of a healthy release than anything else.
He said: "If anything, there is more evidence to show that the violent games reduce aggression and violence. There have actually been some studies about that, that its cathartic. If you go to QuakeCon and you walk by and you see the people there [and compare that to] a random cross section of a college campus, youre probably going to find a more peaceful crowd of people at the gaming convention. I think its at worst neutral and potentially positive."
Id's latest FPS opus Rage is due out this October but they also have admitted to having DOOM 4 ticking along nicely in the background and even suggested at one point that it might be oiut before Rage.
