Id Software have admitted that they were working on something entirely different before they began work on RAGE.

Design director Matt Hooper explained that the opportunity to build a new IP and a new engine from the bottom up was far too good to pass up.

He said: "We actually started on an entirely different project and we kinda switched gears when we realised we had an opportunity here. Brand new technology, brand new IP with RAGE. Really, it's an excuse to do all these cool things we've always wanted to do that maybe didn't fit in DOOM, Quake or some of our other franchise worlds."

Hooper added on the versions of their games: "We've been tinkering around with the idea of doing things with the iOS titles and then RAGE and the fact we can do things very close to the full fidelity of the game on those little devices. We talk about different ideas of something in the iOS version unlocking something in the main game. We havent finalised any of that yet, but its something were considering."
