BBC plans controversial Nintendo documentary
On BBC Three next week folks!
A documentary series called 'Outrageous Fortunes' turns its attention upon Nintendo next week, in a controversial look at the gaming giant's wealth and 'dubious past'. The episode focussing on Nintendo will be first aired on BBC Three on Monday the 12th at 9PM, and reportedly exposes the fortune amassed by the President and his involvement with game royalties and (more seriously) the denial of seizures in children playing Nintendo games. The 1990's heyday of the NES will come under particular scrutiny, and includes details on designers Shigeru Miyamoto and Hiroshi Yamauchi.
The inclusion of an interview with President Yamauchi's son-in-law Minoru Arakawa (head of Nintendo in the 90s) is perhaps the most controversial element of the documentary, apparently going against the company's wishes in finding out "Why [he] forfeited his entitlement to game royalties and what the future holds for the once-mighty Nintendo." The documentary will also look at whether Nintendo top brass lied in court over accusations concerning the seizure side-effects in children.
Apologies to our American readership, but currently the BBC has no plans to broadcast this documentary stateside. Thanks to Gamespot.com for spotting this news, it will be interesting to see what evidence the documentary makers have amassed concerning these much-hyped allegations. Other episodes include looks at Bacardi and Disney.
