Could Steam be coming to Xbox 360?
WIll Microsoft soften to Valve's digital platform?
Microsoft has announced, contrary to previous information given out, that they will be releasing the PC version of Fable III via Steam as well as their own Games for Windows Live digital platform.
The news comes as Portal 2 launches with full Steam support on the PS3 offering cross-platform multiplayer between PC, Mac and PS3 for the first time, and even giving PS3 gamers free copies of the game on PC and Mac through the Steam Play feature.
The partnership between Sony and Valve does have the potential to heat up the console race with Gabe Newell stating back at E3 when the Portal 2 Steam support on PS3 was announced: "We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product. Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases."
Microsoft would clearly be missing out on a trick if they did not at least explore the option of integrating Steam with Xbox Live the was Sony has integrated it with PSN. They wouldn't be letting a digital distribution competitor into their kingdom they would merely be offering an improved multiplayer experience for their Xbox Live Gold subscribers.
