The news comes as launches with full Steam support on the offering cross-platform between PC, and PS3 for the first time, and even giving PS3 gamers free copies of the game on PC and Mac through the Steam Play feature.

The partnership between and does have the potential to heat up the console race with stating back at E3 when the 2 Steam support on PS3 was announced: "We made a promise to gamers at E3 that Portal 2 for the PlayStation 3 would be the best console version of the product. Working together with Sony we have identified a set of features we believe are very compelling to gamers. We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in and future content releases."

Microsoft would clearly be missing out on a trick if they did not at least explore the option of integrating Steam with Live the was Sony has integrated it with PSN. They wouldn't be letting a digital distribution competitor into their kingdom they would merely be offering an improved multiplayer experience for their Gold subscribers.
