It's been rumoured that future PlayStation games will offer cloud-based saving.

The process, which involves storing data and accessing it from a physical device, is said to be a premium, subscription service.

Sony have apparently told developers to prepare for the move, which will allow game progress to be saved and accessed from the PlayStation 3, the newly-announced Next Generation Portable, the upcoming Ericsson phone or any other supported platform.

Because the system will be paid for, Sony are allowing developers to opt out. A wise move as not all games will be playable across multiple platforms.

According to the rumour, the process will be called "Online Saving," and will come into effect during the PS3's 3.60 update.
