File size cap killed Super Meat Boy on WiiWare
40Mb simply not enough
Team Meat has revealed that they cancelled their proposed WiiWare version of Super Meat Boy because they would have had to cut it to pieces in order for it to fit in the 40Mb file cap imposed on Nintedo's home console download service.
The WiiWare version would be missing leaderboards, Dark World levels, support for DLC, music to accompany boss battles and custscenes and there would only have been six different musical tracks including one for the retro themed levels.
Team Meat's Edmund McMillen explained: "There is no way to avoid the fact that if we released a 40MB version of Super Meat Boy it would be a s**t version of the game. It's a lose lose situation, but the fact of the matter is if we release a sh***y game, we will have to live with that for the rest of our careers and have to cop to the fact that it is a sh***y game."
He added: "We knew of the limits early on but overestimated our ability to get Nintendo to raise the file size. It's lame that there is a 40MB cap on WiiWare games ... but it was our fault for blindly assuming this cap wasn't set in stone, and we are sorry for that."
Thanks Joystiq.
