Former Worldwide Studios boss, Phil Harrison believes that the is a very hard act to follow and the may have trouble keeping pace.

Harrison said on the 10th birthday of the PlayStation 2 that the the PS3 is in for a long hard slog in order to be as popular as its predecessor.

He explained: "I hope PS3 can match PS2, but I think the market dynamics are slightly different. For a large chunk of its life-cycle, the PS2 didnt really have any anywhere in the world, so Sony was able to sell a huge number of units. If PS3 does reach the same level it will take longer and it will be a more difficult challenge."

To date the PlayStation 2 has sold 146 million consoles worldwide.
