EA has announced that they will be making a follow-up to the 2009 track reboot of the series.

Need for Speed: Shift 2 Unleashed is planned for release in the spring of 2011 and hopes to ramp up the adrenaline-fuelled blend of simulation and arcade the the first game did so well. It will also take advantage of the Autolog system that will be introduce in Criterion's Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit which launches this week.

The game's executive producer Marcus Nilsson said: "Shift 2 Unleashed is redefining immersive racing by blending the rush of tearing up the track at unbelievable speeds with the emotional experience of competitive battle. We are also working closely with real-world performance drivers to ensure that Shift 2 Unleashed captures their experience and becomes the benchmark in authentic racing action."

Need for Speed: Shift launched in the summer of 2009 and has sold almost five million copies to date.
