Capcom wanted to cause a stir with Devil May Cry redesign
It was all part of the plan
Capcom has admitted that they wanted to court a bit of controversy when they decided go with Ninja Theory's redesigning of Devil May Cry's hero Dante.
In fact, Capcom's Christian Svensson told IGN that they were banking on Ninja Theory's complete reworking of the action series to cause a bit of a controversy and get the fans talking.
Svensson said:"I will argue that any changes will bring about a knee-jerk reaction from fans. We know that; we knew that going into it. To be fair, I think some of the strategy here was to create that discussion and dialogue, and I think it drastically raises the visibility of the title versus if we had just done another Dante."
Unlike Sucker Punch's recent u-turn on the redesign of Cole for Infamous 2, Svensson said that there will be no turning back for Ninja Theory's take on Devil May Cry. "The original concepts that came back for Dante were actually extremely close to the Dante everyone knows and loves," he continued. "The feedback that came back from [Keiji] Inafune and [Hideaki] Itsuno was, 'No guys, this needs to be completely different, we need you to go much further and be much more creative.' And literally dozens of potential iterations later became what we as a team felt comfortable and actually happy with."
