Sales of iPad-like tablet devices could threaten consoles

Sales of tablets like the iPad could pose a serious threat to the sales according to analytical firm Gartner.

Consumers are snapping up tablet devices extremely quickly with Gartner estimating that sales will reach 19.5 million by the end of the year with sales jumping to 54.8 million by the end of 2011 and 208 million by 2014.

Gartner's VP of research, Carolina Vilanese said: "The all-in-one nature of media tablets will result in the cannibalization of other consumer electronics devices such as e-readers, gaming devices and media players."

She added: "The usage model is closer to what consumers do with a smartphone while on the go than what they do on a PC when they are at their desk. It is about running applications, playing games, watching video content, reading books and magazines, surfing the web, updating your status on your social network of choice and checking email."
