Sony seems to have been working on an adapter that will add compatibility to the PS3.

According to trademark filings are working on a box that can plug into the to allow it to play PS2 games.

The original 60GB PS3s had in-built backwards-compatibility for PS2 titles but it didn't quite work properly and was removed to save production costs.

From the schematics dug by the folks at Siliconera it seems to be a dongle that contains a PS2 processor that will allow the PS3 to play PS2 games through the PS3.
