SCEA celebrates PlayStation's 15th birthday
377 million strong
In 1995, the PlayStation was a newcomer to the gaming industry. Exactly 15 years and 377 million consoles later, though, the brand has become a household name thats largely synonymous with video games.
To celebrate, Sony is giving fans special discounts and promotional items. The platform holder launched several free static themes for its PSP and PS3 devices. Additionally, Sony is discounting several PS One classics on PSN in SCEA territories.
When you look in the rear-view mirror at what was happening in 1995 you see that the video game industry was an entirely different animal, SCEA CEO Jack Tretton said. Now, we are seeing a convergence of video games and home entertainment, and a market that is a robust $20 billion in revenue.
While the PlayStation brand is still an influential force in the gaming industry, competition from Microsoft and Nintendo have grown considerably. According to the latest reports from the NPD Group, the PSP and PS3 were the worst-selling platforms during August.
