UK tabloid 'newspaper' the Daily Star has apologised for its disgraceful hoax story about a title based on the story of Raoul Moat.

The story which was published earlier this week claimed that Games had a game in the works entitled GTA: Rothbury and featured a badly-made mock-up of a packshot for the supposed title.

The article was quickly pulled from the Daily Star's website after it became clear that the story was a tasteless hoax.

The Daily Star has officially apologised for the incident stating publicly: "It is now accepted that there were never any plans by Rockstar Games to publish such a game and that the story was false. We apologise for publishing the story using a mock-up of the game cover, our own comments on the matter and soliciting critical comments from a grieving member."

They added: "We unreservedly apologise to Rockstar Games and we have undertaken not to repeat the claims again. We have also agreed to pay them a substantial amount in damages which they are donating to charity."
