Downloadables saved Doublefine after Brutal Legend 2 axing
Schafer follows Gilbert into the realm of downloadable games
After EA decided that they didn't want a Brutal Legend sequel Tim Schafer's Doublefine studios faced some tough decisions.
Schafer admitted as he addressed the Develop Conference in Brighton that the news was a bit of a shock and he wasn't sure what to do next.
"We got a phone call," Schafer began, "where the publisher told me they didnt want to do Brutal Legend 2. It was odd because I thought they said it was a done deal. I had not prepared for that news. And suddenly we were running out of cash with a big team. And we had to think about what to do. Do we have to lay off people?"
He continued: "We had eight game prototypes really small games and we chose the best four and pitched them to numerous studios on a kind of road show."
This worked out to be a good plan for Doublefine as Schafer said the smaller titles put them "in a better position, because you're asking for less money. You have a great chance of keeping your own IP with small projects."
Thanks Develop Online.
