Sony confirm SingStar

Karaoke sing-off looming

Matching Konami's announcement of Karaoke Stage pound-for-pound, Sony Computer Entertainment also revealed SingStar today, a direct competitor to Konami's efforts, currently being developed by Sony London - the studio responsible for the acclaimed EyeToy. Like the title of today's earlier announcement, SingStar will make use of a USB microphone attachment for the PS2, and will use voice recognition technology to judge the quality (or lack thereof) of a player's vocals.

Three major gameplay modes are promised, including the option for up to eight players to compete, and here's the rest from the "horse's mouth": Sing Mode encourages players to simply pick up the mic and start singing, either alone or battling against a mate. Pass the Mic is the ultimate party game, encouraging duets and team competitions; and Star Maker allows budding stars to follow their dream from singing in the bedroom to performing in a sell-out concert for their adoring fans.

EyeToy compatibility is included to allow the visualization of players 'on-screen' and on-stage, whilst two mic's will be included out of the box. Here's the tracklist, which ranges from the sublime (The Darkness) to the ridiculous (Atomic Kitten):

  • Liberty X - Just a Little
  • Mis-Teeq - Scandalous
  • The Darkness - I Believe in a Thing Called Love
  • A-Ha - Take on Me
