As grows in popularity, the organisation in charge of standardising the format is expanding the data capacity to support 100GB and 128GB discs for use on new players.

Unfortunately, these larger discs won't be compatible with PS3. A update won't suffice either because the triple- and quadruple-layer Blu-rays require a more powerful laser than the one included in the current models.

Of course, that doesn't mean can't release a new PS3 model with a laser equipped to handle these new discs, although such a move would risk fragmenting the console's growing user base.

For the time being, plain ol' 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray discs will have to suffice.
