Infinity Ward loses Call of Duty
The longest day
In a stunning turn of events following the dismissal of Infinity Ward senior leadership on Monday, Activision has announced plans to move development of future Call of Duty titles away from Infinity Ward.
It's nothing short of an industry-shaking event, the lauded developer of Modern Warfare 2 no longer given the right to create instalments in the very franchise that it created. Activision made the announcement after two executives at Infinity Ward were fired for purported "insubordination."
A new studio will take Infinity Ward's place: Sledgehammer Games, which was formed by former EA employees after the release of survival-horror game Dead Space. The first Call of Duty game from them will be released in autumn 2011.
Activision did not mention future plans for Infinity Ward, though the developer is still in charge of two Modern Warfare 2 map packs scheduled for release later this year.
