With Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton hailing 2009 as a banner year for in a statement last week, he forgot to mention one little thing: PSP.

As though tacitly acknowledging that 2009 was the worst year yet for the faltering handheld, Sony glossed over without so much as a mention. Instead, Tretton focused entirely on PS3, without mentioning PSP once.

It's understandable that Tretton would want the focus on PS3: in January were up 36% over last year. In contrast, PSP sales fell 58% from levels last January.

Much of the decline has to do with a lack of compelling new game releases and the expensive price tag attached to PSPgo, but the success of and iPod touch plays a role too. Record sales have been a problem for PSP as well.
