Ubi DRM requires constant net connection
Starting with Assassin's Creed II on PC
After being stung heavily by piracy at the PC launch of Assassin's Creed, Ubisoft are implementing a new DRM system to keep the pirates at bay.
The new system will require PC gamers to be connected and logged on to Ubisoft's servers whilst they play games like Assassin's Creed II, regardless of whether they are playing single or multiplayer modes.
The only perk of the new system seems to be that players can resume their play sessions from any PC, as savegame files are stored on the server under the player's Ubi.com account.
The new system will not limit the number of installs that can be made but, like Steam, the account linked to that game can only be active on one machine at a time.
According to Ubisoft the majority of their PC releases will use this new digital rights management system but if server services are ceased for any title the game will be patched to preserve core functionality.
