Square Enix don't obsess over 'East and West'
Not just about difficulty levels, either
While the Japanese games market may have different tastes from the Western mainstream, developer-publisher Square Enix don't obsess over this, according to Final Fantasy: The Crystal Bearers producer Akitoshi Kawazu.
While some boil the difference down to simply 'hard and easy', Kawazu says that there is more nuance at play than just gamers' tolerance for difficulty.
"The presence of Japanese games is not as strong within the international market these days, and as a business that creates and sells games, the reception in the Western market is naturally a point of interest to us," Destructoid were told.
He believes different kinds of players exist in both markets, regardless of East and West, and that Square look to tap into these niches with their games. "I do feel that one major difference in the Japanese and Western gamers' preferences lies in the art style," the designer adds.
