BioWare boss says Japanese RPGs stuck in rut
The genre needs to evolve
In a recent discussion with BioWare co-founders, Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, Destructoid got the scoop on their feelings about the current state of the RPG genre. What they had to say is that the RPG is in a rut, at least on Japan's side of the Pacific.
Zeschuk was especially vocal on the subject, saying that western RPGs have evolved to new levels while JRPGs have essentially stayed the same. Here's a sample: "The fall of the JRPG in large part is due to a lack of evolution, a lack of progression. They kept delivering the same thing over and over. They make the dressing better, they look prettier, but it's still the same experience."
Zeschuk did mention a few exceptions, such as Demon's Souls, he also begged the question as to whether or not GTA IV can be considered an RPG. Certainly there are still a vast number of fans of the style of game Zeschuk referred to, but if nothing else he brought up an interesting topic; something to consider.
