Nintendo president says to expect more 2D platforming games given the phenomenal critical and commercial success of New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

In the "Iwata Asks" series published on Nintendo's official website the executive confides, "I feel that 2D Mario titles will definitely be made along these lines. I don't think there's any other way."

Blockbuster of 2D Mario games, of which New Super Mario Bros. Wii is only the latest, certainly support the idea. The predecessor also posted huge sales, demonstrating a real desire for classic side-scrolling Mario.

For the near future, however, it's back to with 2010's Super Mario Galaxy 2.
