Modern Warfare 2 writer Jesse Stern admits in an interview with GamePro that the airport level was purposefully designed to stir up and have an emotional impact.

Stern claims that he's not responsible for the way in which people are reacting to the scenario, despite confessing his desire to put players in an uncomfortable situation.

"Ultimately, our intention was to put you as close as possible to atrocity," he explains. "As for the effect it has on you, that's not for us to determine."

That Stern would conclude reaction to the level would be anything other than controversial seems questionable.

Continuing his attempt to justify the hotly debated level, he compares it with documentaries chronicling the massacre at Columbine and terrorist attack in Mumbai, India. It should be noted that none of his references place the viewer in the perspective of the attackers.

On the other hand, none of the documentaries he referenced went on to record-sales either.
