Sony Computer Entertainment president claims is invigorating of hardware, despite early indicators showing a decline in the number of handhelds sold since PSPgo launched.

Speaking with GamesIndustry.biz, House insisted that UMD-equipped PSP-3000s were flying off shelves thanks to a successful PSPgo launch.

"I don't think there's been a huge amount of cannibalisation, and I think those sales have come in and lifted overall PSP sales."

Unfortunately, early sales data doesn't support the point. In the US, PSP sales (for all models including PSPgo) were down 15,000 units in October from the previous month. In short, PSPgo caused a drop in PSP sales, not a rise.

To be fair, sales over the course of the holiday season through December will be a better indicator of the effect PSPgo is exerting on the handheld market. We'll be keeping a close eye it.
