According to a new report from DFC Intelligence, it wasn't that saved the from domination - but rather the success of the console.

Apparently, the advent of the Wii prevented the 360 becoming the 'de facto' games console, and prevented stealing a sizeable lead over their rival.

"The main danger faced was that the 360 would become embedded as the system of choice," offers the new report.

"Instead consumers flocked to the Wii. The Xbox 360 had solid sales, but they have not been enough to give Microsoft anywhere near a breakout market position."
