Blizzard's annual fan-tastic bash may be one of the biggest dates on the 'community' gaming calendar, but despite epic attendance the show isn't a money spinner for the maker. Quite the opposite in fact.

The event is of course a prime promotional opportunity for the firm, but it doesn't make a profit. Rather, exec Frank Pierce sees it as an opportunity to touch base with their fans and to push their wares.

"BlizzCon is operated at a substantial loss for the company. It's a huge marketing opportunity, so that's the benefit we get out of that. But in terms of any kind of financial gain, it actually is a loss for us," Frank Pierce said, speaking at GDC Austin.

Still, given the amount gold the developer is earning from World of Warcraft, it seems unlikely the event will be axed, Pearce describing the bash as an 'operating expense'. Thanks VG247.
