Xbox One useless without its day one patch

Microsoft confirms a mandatory launch day patch

Microsoft has announced that the Xbox One will require a day one update in order for it to work.

Director of product management for the Xbox One Albert Penello announced the news in a new interview explaining that the console is basically shipping with the old OS as revealed back in May with all those nasty restrictive features that everyone railed against.

As a result not even disc-based will work as it requires an internet connection for them to play and Xbox Live will not allow you to connect until you apply the update. Xbox One useless without its day one patch

When asked about what gamers will be able to do with the machine straight out of the box Penello replied, "Nothing. You need the day one update. A lot of the apps come with the day one update because they wouldn't have even been done. You're gonna need to take this update. It's not gonna be really an optional thing. Functionally, you will be able to do very little without taking the day one update."
