Iranian gaming hits GamesCom
Unexpected
The apparently tragically underrated Iranian games industry has made a showing at the GamesCom convention here in Cologne, with a stand populated by the Iran National Foundation of Computer Games.
Yes, we've not heard of them either, but titles produced by Iranian videogames companies include an Iran-Iraq war tank shooter, a platformer set in Persia [Prince of Tehran? - Ed], and adventure game, and a title with a storyline set during the Islamic Revolution.
Iran is generally in the news for reasons other than creative videogame endeavors and the country is currently subject to a catalogue of trade and military sanctions which hinder economic development.
"We are using this event to promote what is happening in the Iranian games industry," said Amir Tarbyatjoui to the BBC. "We believe we have more potential and we want to promote that potential."
Last year Iran join the Electronic Software Ratings Board, providing consumers access to game ratings. Word is the Iranians will be attending E3 next year.
