Nintendo need to grow Wii userbase - Wada
Core audience still quite small, says game maker
Marvelous executive Yasuhiro Wada has said that Nintendo's core userbase is still smaller than you'd imagine, and that the gaming giant needs to work on growing this audience; in order to expand the games market as a whole.
"The Nintendo market is pretty humongous right now but I think that's primarily because of all the light users, the casual users. The core userbase for the Wii is really still small. One of the things that Nintendo is trying to do, like with the MotionPlus, is try to make it more advanced and more friendly to the gamer-gamer," he told Gamasutra.
"But it's still not enough because Sony and Microsoft are starting to do the same sorts of technology. In those cases they are still weak, but I think it's really important to have more core titles such as Zelda and other titles from Nintendo to grow that core market area, so the whole market can grow as well."
Marvelous are happy making games for the Wii, Wada assures, but he admits that the technology at his studio is a little lacking, meaning that they don't need the clout of the high-definition consoles yet anyway. That said, in the future he sees the firm embracing a more multi-platform stance.
