PlayStation sales on the way down
Big drop in sales and revenue for Sony
Sony have this morning unveiled a few statistics from the first-quarter of 2009, and if you thought gaming was going to out-run the global recession, you might have to think again.
Over the quarter in question, 1.1 million PS3s were sold, and 1.3 million PSP handhelds. That compares (unfavourably) with 1.6 million PS3s and 3.6 million PSPs during the same period in 2008.
Software sales also dropped, according to word from the platform holder, although the PS2's price cut did see sales up at 1.6 million from 1.5 million a year earlier.
Overall, Sony's games business was down a whopping 18 percent year-on-year, the company blaming the rising Yen for the drop in revenue. The newly formed Networked Product and Services division (which includes the PlayStation family of products, and hardware like the Walkman), saw sales drop 37.4 percent over the period.
