A new study from stat-obsessives finds that the percentage of girls getting into video gaming is on the up, mainly thanks to the console.

Apparently, the total percentage of female console players now stands at a respectable 28 percent of the of the market, which isn't too shabby given the pastime's once woeful standing with the fairer sex.

Apparently, the numbers of girls playing games is up 5 percent over 2008; Wii use having leapt 19 percent over the same period.

"Last year was one of the most transformative in history in terms of defining the audience for gaming," says Anita Frazier, of the NPD Group. "Even with the increased from mobile and social network gaming, the console gamer segment added the most new participants to its ranks in the last year."
