Identity theft threat hangs over gamers
New research undertaken by identity and online security experts Garlik has found that gamers are more likely then ever to be the target and victim of online identity theft. The threat pertains in the main to online services such as MMO games and Xbox Live.
As well as the theft of in-game currency and Microsoft Points (or the equivalent), players also run the risk of having bank or credit card details taken too.
The trading and selling of log-in information has become hot property for online fraudsters, but the bigger risks emerge when it comes to bank details and the like.
Identity criminals will most frequently be found using a gamer's personal details to apply for credit, although it's worth noting that while the frequency of crimes is still low, gamers should none the less be sensible, and not give out information to nefarious types.
